Red Ribbon Week is Next Week

R-E-S-P-E-C-T…what it means to me. More than just a catchy set of lyrics sung by the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin, respect is a topic that has become more and more educationally applied in our schools. As schools pick up teaching social cues and appropriate social behaviors in addition to the core academic subjects, respect becomes a classroom focus. In addition, this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is Respect Yourself. I found these resources that I thought would be helpful for other Discovery Education community members who will be participating in the national campaign.

Respect Content Collection offers a curated selection of age appropriate materials including media, lesson plans and boards that help educators to build lessons and activities that will engage and educate students.

What’s Respect? Series This great series of short vignettes helps students learn about various types of respect: self-respect, respect of another person, respect of rules, and respecting ideas. These are great for those teachable moments when you need something quick (all the videos are less than 5 minutes in length) to kick start a discussion or conversation.

For those who want to create a music video, try Respect and Pride, a fun, easy to learn song identifying the qualities of respect and pride in oneself and others. This Hip Hop Mob song has catchy lyrics and would make a great music video, green screen project, or paper slide video. Check out the SOS strategies Shake It Up, Puppet Pictures, or Paper Slide for ideas on integrating this into your curriculum.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Red Ribbon Week Virtual Field Trip on Thursday, October 29th at 1pm ET, honoring the police force’s furriest officers who deserve a lot of respect.
